Well, it’s been three weeks since this year’s auction (March 28, 2008) and enough of the dust has settled to give us a clear view (pun intended) of what was accomplished. As of today, the auction raised $355,000 for MCS, providing another in a string of successful events. Please note that we will continue to complete some item sales and will receive additional donations, so this figure will be revised up over the next several weeks. Much work has gone into making this the event it is and I want to thank all of those who have played a role in supporting this school.
“Success breeds complacency,” as the saying goes, and we can all become strangely blasé about the auction total for this or any other year. This is unfortunate for at least two reasons. First, this is an almost unbelievable figure for a school our size, especially a school with no secondary program. Second, it is easy to lose sight of what this money will accomplish. We are already taking the steps to complete the building projects for fund-an-item this summer and are reviewing financial aid applications for several current families. If I stop thinking about the total for a moment and instead concentrate on the tangible good it will produce, then I am truly humbled and thankful to God and to you.
This total represents the means to continue to improve the school experience for every student at MCS. Within this total are the means to fund scholarships for families that otherwise could not afford this school. Within this total is the spirit of giving that James describes as pure religion. It is a willingness to help others and to seek the broader good. Most of all, it is one facet reflecting the spirit of Mariners, an aspiration to provide the best in education for our students while also seeking to share this gift with others.
During the course of our lives, we are given a finite number of opportunities to create a legacy or to be part of something that will endure. By helping this school to grow and flourish, each of us is seizing one of these opportunities. Thank you for making MCS the school it is, and the school it will be. Auction 2009 will be held Friday, March 27....Save the date.
